The official currency of Hong Kong is Hong Kong Dollar (HKD).  In addition to cash, there are other useful tools and platforms for managing payments in Hong Kong:

  • Carry some cash: While digital payments are common, smaller shops and street vendors may prefer cash.

  • Check for fees: Some international cards may charge foreign transaction fees, so check with your bank before traveling.

  • Use Octopus for convenience: It’s the most versatile payment tool for everyday expenses.

1. Octopus Card 

   - The Octopus Card is a rechargeable smart card widely used for public transportation (MTR, buses, trams, ferries), retail purchases, and even at some restaurants.  

   - You can buy and top up the card at MTR stations, convenience stores, or online.

2. AlipayHK

   - A popular mobile payment app in Hong Kong, AlipayHK allows you to pay for goods, services, and even public transportation.  

   - It’s widely accepted in shops, restaurants, and online platforms.

3. WeChat Pay HK

   - WeChat Pay is another widely used mobile payment platform in Hong Kong.  

   - It’s accepted at many retail stores, restaurants, and online services.

4. Tap & Go

   - A mobile payment service in Hong Kong that allows you to make contactless payments using your smartphone. It’s accepted at many retail stores and for public transportation.

5. Apple Pay / Google Pay

   - Both Apple Pay and Google Pay are widely accepted in Hong Kong for contactless payments at retail stores, restaurants, and public transportation.  

   - Simply link your credit or debit card to your device for seamless payments.

6. Credit Cards (Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay etc.)

   - Credit cards are widely accepted in Hong Kong, especially in hotels, restaurants, and larger retail stores.  

   - UnionPay is particularly popular and accepted at many locations, including ATMs for cash withdrawals.

7. ATM Cash Withdrawals

   - ATMs are widely available in Hong Kong, and most accept international cards (Visa, Mastercard, etc.).  

   - Look for ATMs from major banks like HSBC, Hang Seng Bank, or Bank of China.

8. Currency Exchange

   - You can exchange currency at banks, exchange counters, or the airport.  

   - Use a common Currency Converter online to check and estimate exchange rates.
